2020 Fall Fashion Must-Haves

Since it is starting to get cooler in New York City, and we have either started to or already put away all of our warm weather clothing, we have compiled a list of the fall must haves to keep you warm and on-trend for the fall and winter seasons.

Adding some of these pieces to your closet this fall will have you looking forward to outdoor gatherings and dining even when it’s cold out.

Each of these items are available at a variety of stores/websites and can always be found at an affordable price!

Faux Leather

A huge staple to add to your closet this fall is absolutely some faux leather. Although leather jackets have been in style for years, we are talking leather blazers, trousers, and leggings.

Adding some texture like leather to your wardrobe completely elevates your look and it can even be done affordably.

My favorite way to style leather is with neutral colors to give you more of a sophisticated New York fashion vibe.

Trench Coats

Not only are trench coats on trend, and have been for a while, they are a fashionable way to stay warm when the real winter weather creeps into New York.

I would consider coats to be an essential “fourth layer” because they can be layered over hoodies, flannels, cardigans, and even lighter coats.

When looking for the perfect trench coat, consider solid colored neutrals and subtle plaid patterns.

My favorite way to style trench coats is with hoodies/crewnecks, my favorite pair of ripped jeans, and a pair of chunky boots!

To take this look to the next level, consider adding your favorite pair of sunnies and some jewelry.

Chunky Boots

While the weather cools down, you’ll want to start incorporating more boots into your wardrobe. Although many different styles of boots have come and gone from the trends throughout recent seasons, the Doc Marten style of boot has become the staple shoe in our fall closets.

And don’t worry if Doc Martens are out of your budget, there are many stores and websites that sell a similar style for less than half the price!

If you’re not much of an online shopper for shoes, some stores to check out by the Brooklyn campus are Macy’s, H&M, and Nordstrom Rack.

Oversized Flannels

A huge part of fall fashion in 2020 has been oversized flannels. The best part is that flannels are usually super easy to find and can be extremely affordable, especially on a college budget!

The best way to style oversized flannels as a third layer is with a cute crop top, body suit, or graphic tee paired with your favorite pair of skinny jeans and boots!

Some tips to getting oversized flannels for cheap is to visit local thrift stores like Goodwill on Livingston St or even looking in the men’s section of Nordstrom Rack and TJ Maxx on Fulton!

Teddy/Sherpa Coats

Sherpa coats are definitely a simple way to accentuate an outfit. The “teddy” textured coat comes in a variety of lengths and styles, and is one of the latest pieces you should add to your closet!

Sherpa coats are perfect for the New York weather. They also effortlessly elevate your entire outfit. They can be paired with a simple tee or hoodie with jeans or even leggings for a sporty look.

This style of coat can be found at a number of stores and websites including H&M, Urban Outfitters, Target, Zara, and so many more.

Faux Fur Coats

Similar to the faux leather, faux fur is another texture that really takes your wardrobe to the next level and even gives off a designer vibe.

Another great way to come across some affordable faux fur is by visiting local thrift shops, resale stores like Buffalo Exchange and Plato’s Closet, and stores like H&M, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, and even Target!

Style the fur coats similarly to the trench coats! Don’t forget to add your favorite accessories and a great pair of boots or sneakers.

Cropped Cardigans

Cropped Cardigans are the next trend that you can find at an endless amount of stores for a great price.

These cardigans can be styled a variety of ways, but we’re really looking for a tight button-down that can be worn on its own or underneath a third layer.

The cardigans look great with your favorite pair of jeans with a nice pair of boots. Go for a neutral color or an awesome fall shade like mustard yellow or deep orange.

The best thing about this trend is that you can even make your own cropped cardigan! If you’re crafty and always looking to save a buck, (like most of us) you can find a simple cardigan at most thrift or resale stores and crop it yourself at home!

Scarves That Double as Masks

This trend has saved me. Not only in a fashion sense but when it’s cold, cute scarves that double as masks really do help keep you warm and elevate your outfit at the same time.

I have found two that I absolutely love from Target for under $10. If a scarf seems like too much for you, a bandana is another great option for a fashionable mask this fall.

Happy shopping!

A few of my personal favorite sites for the best deals on fall trends are:

H&M

Zara

And don’t forget to always check your local second-hand clothing/vintage shops for awesome pieces at a great price.
