Israel Declares War on Gaza After Surprise Attack
Gaza launched a surprise attack on Israel early Saturday morning. Hamas, a sanctioned terrorist group by the United States, has claimed responsibility for the attack that has killed at least 700 Israeli citizens as well as injured up to 1,100 others. Counterattacks from Israeli forces have killed at least 413 Palestinian citizens and injured up to 1,600 others. President Biden made a statement regarding the attacks where he vowed to “not ever fail to have their [Israel’s] back.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a Saturday night speech from Tel Aviv that the Israeli military was still clearing out militants from Israeli towns near Gaza. “What happened today has not been seen before in Israel,” Netanyahu said.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was Ousted from Position
In a historical vote, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has been removed from the House Speaker position. Representative Matt Gaetz led the charge from the Republican party, combining with 7 other GOP members and all the Democratic representatives for a 216-210 vote. This is the first time in U.S. history that a speaker has been removed. GOP members criticized McCarthy for working with the Democrats to pass a new budget. With a government shutdown 40 days away, time is of the essence to elect a new speaker.
Trump vs New York
The state of New York versus Donald Trump is officially underway. The trial began on Monday, Oct. 3, in a Manhattan courthouse. Trump is accused of inflating his net worth and is being sued for $250 million by the state of New York. After five days of deliberations, Trump's team filed an appeal over a pre-trial ruling to halt the trial. The appeal was denied, and the trial will go on as planned. Deliberations paused over the weekend and will resume Oct. 9.
Team USA Gymnastics Becomes the First Team to Win 7 Consecutive World Titles
The United States women's gymnastics team became the first team in history to win 7 consecutive world titles. Simone Biles led the charge, collecting two individual gold and silver medals as well. 10 years ago, Biles began her international journey in Antwerp, Belgium, where she collected her first world title. Now, a 33-time world medalist, 26 world championship medals, and 7 Olympic medals, Simone Biles is the most decorated gymnast in history.
Drake Releases, For All The Dogs, and Announces a Break From Music
The multi-grammy award-winning artist, Drake, has announced he will be taking a break from music to focus on his health. Just hours after releasing his new album, Drake took to his radio show to announce the news. “I probably won't make music for a little bit, I'm gonna be honest, I need to focus on my health, first and foremost — and I'll talk about that soon enough,” he told listeners. For All the Dogs is Drake’s eighth studio album.
